Sheikhpura: Sameera Khan, a dedicated cyclist from Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, is breaking barriers to empower girls through cycling. Orphaned at just nine years old, she faced numerous challenges yet transformed her struggles into remarkable achievements.
Having cycled across 37 countries, Sameera passionately advocates for girls’ dreams. “Daughters aren’t just for marriage; they have aspirations that deserve support,” she asserts. Despite facing hurdles like harassment and social stigma in India, Sameera continues to ride and inspire. A standout moment for her was receiving recognition from Bihar’s DGP, Vinay Kumar, which made her feel safe and encouraged.
In 2018, Sameera embarked on her mission to inspire young girls by venturing beyond her comfort zone. During her travels, she has cycled through various countries, including France, Germany, and Japan. Alongside her cycling accomplishments, she has also summited 11 peaks, conquering the daunting Ama Dablam in Nepal.
Sameera’s project extends into Indian states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, where she visits schools to motivate female students. She emphasizes, “Girls deserve the same chances as boys. We are strong; we must cultivate our talents and empower ourselves.”
Statistics reveal that girls are often sidelined in education and opportunities. According to a 2021 report from the World Bank, girls are 1.5 times more likely than boys to be out of secondary school in low-income countries. Sameera’s journey stands as a beacon of hope, urging families to support their daughters’ ambitions.
Every day, Sameera pedals between 50 to 60 kilometers. She dreams of establishing an institution dedicated to female empowerment. However, government support remains elusive, highlighting the ongoing need for advocacy. Her story is not just about cycling; it’s a powerful reminder that with determination, one can inspire change and challenge social norms.
