The World Trade Organization’s Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, recently praised the Abia State Government for launching electric buses. This initiative aims to combat pollution and climate change.
During the unveiling of the Abia Green Shuttle Electric Bus Service on December 22, 2025, she called the project a significant step. She pointed out that while Africa contributes only about three percent of global carbon emissions, the continent still bears responsibility for promoting a cleaner environment.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that Abia’s adoption of electric buses shows strong leadership in addressing climate issues. She expressed hope that this move would kickstart broader eco-friendly transport reforms in the region.
Abia’s Governor, Alex Otti, echoed these sentiments, labeling the initiative as part of the state’s goal for net-zero emissions. He explained that the transition from compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to electric vehicles aligns with global climate targets. Though CNG buses are cleaner than traditional options, they still generate emissions. The electric buses, he said, are a sustainable long-term solution.
Otti also mentioned that the procurement of these buses includes features for persons with disabilities, ensuring everyone can benefit. He acknowledged some early hurdles, such as delivery delays for charging stations, but assured citizens that operations would begin soon.
The buses can cover between 400 to 450 kilometers on a full charge. To encourage use, the service will be free for the first month. Safety features include surveillance cameras to ensure order during travel, with strict penalties for misconduct.
Dr. Cosmos Maduka, president of Coscharis Group, highlighted that Abia is the first state in Nigeria to officially launch electric buses. He noted that this move sets a precedent for others to follow. The buses come equipped with amenities like air conditioning and onboard charging ports, catering to a wide range of passengers.
The Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, referred to the launch as a historic milestone, attributing it to Governor Otti’s innovative leadership. He assured residents that further expansion of the bus service would take place in collaboration with transport unions.
The electric buses will serve key routes in Abia, including Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. A test ride around Umuahia marked the official kickoff of this environmentally friendly transport service.
Overall, Abia’s steps towards green transportation not only promise to improve air quality but also signal a significant shift in the approach to urban mobility in Nigeria.
