In rural communities across The Gambia, local businesses are taking off, thanks to support from the RICAR project. Beneficiaries are now focused on growing their ventures to make life better for everyone and to adapt to climate change. RICAR, which stands for Resilience in Climate Adaptation and Resilience, is backed by the World Food Programme and works with various local organizations to achieve its goals.
This five-year project aims to help rural populations build stronger, climate-resistant livelihoods. It does this by encouraging diverse income sources and reducing vulnerability to climate shocks. The project collaborates with the National Nutrition Agency, which runs programs to inform and engage the community through trained teams.
One standout aspect of RICAR is its Community Change Agents. These local leaders promote environmentally friendly practices and receive grants to start climate-smart businesses. For instance, Bakary Kamaso from Ali Makka village received a D250,000 grant to open a consumer shop. “I want to expand my business to make food more accessible for my community,” he shares. His story is just one of many highlighting the positive changes brought by RICAR.
Saikou Dampha, another Change Agent from Jaga Jari village, invested in sheep rearing. Ismaila Sanyang from Gada Faro pursued animal husbandry. Their efforts not only create jobs but also contribute to a more reliable food supply in their areas.
According to a recent survey by The Food and Agriculture Organization, over 80% of participants in programs like RICAR reported improved food security. This data underscores the importance of initiatives aimed at climate resilience in rural settings. As climate challenges grow, RICAR’s work shows how smart investments can uplift communities, safeguard livelihoods, and strengthen food security in The Gambia.
