Christmas Box Office: A Quick Rundown
Christmas Eve often brings anticipation and excitement for movie fans. This year, despite rainy weather in LA, theaters kept their showtimes steady, knowing that many viewers would choose a cozy movie night after holiday dinners.
On Christmas Eve, the overall box office hit about $27.6 million. This includes $2 million from previews of the new A24 film, Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet. This is a notable increase compared to last year’s A Complete Unknown, which earned $1.4 million in previews. Sony’s comedy Anaconda, featuring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, also pulled in $2.1 million in previews.
Interestingly, the Christmas Eve ticket sales were down from Tuesday’s total of nearly $40 million, reflecting a drop of 31%. The best recent Christmas Eve performance was post-COVID in 2021, thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home, which made $31.1 million. However, this year saw a 24% increase compared to 2022, when Avatar: Way of Water was in theaters, earning $14.8 million on Christmas Eve.
As of now, Avatar: Fire and Ash leads with $10.7 million at 3,800 theaters, bringing its total to $129.7 million. Zootopia 2 has been a standout, raking in $3.2 million yesterday, with a cumulative total nearing $296.1 million. It’s on track to hit the $300 million mark soon.
In contrast, other films like David and The Housemaid earned around $2.5 million and $1.45 million, respectively. SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants also performed decently, with $1.78 million reported.
Looking ahead, Avatar 3 is projected to bring in about $75 million over the extended weekend. Anaconda aims for $20 million, while Song Sung Blue is estimated to earn between $10 million and $14 million.
In terms of reviews, Marty Supreme has an impressive audience score of 86% and a critical score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are less enthusiastic about Anaconda, giving it a 49% rating. Song Sung Blue is rated 76% but lacks audience feedback so far.
As the holiday season continues, theater performances will keep evolving, reflecting both viewer preferences and the ongoing trends in the film industry. It will be interesting to watch how these numbers shape up in the coming days.
