How Trician-Renee Edwards is Transforming Children’s Lives Through the Power of Entertainment and Education

Losing a parent can be one of the toughest experiences for a child. At just four years old, Trician-Renee Edwards faced this reality when her mother, born in Montserrat, passed away from lupus.

Her mother’s battle with the illness inspired Trician to pursue a career in medicine. She wanted to help others know the care and compassion she didn’t get to share with her mom. “I considered becoming a pediatrician because I love children,” Trician said. Growing up in Scarborough, she naturally connected with young kids, making it easy for her to work with them.

After volunteering at a summer camp in Toronto, she joined the team full-time. Over time, her focus shifted to educating and entertaining children in creative ways.

She founded The Love & Light Collective and launched a YouTube channel. Her goal is to create fun, educational content that nurtures the growth of children aged three to twelve. “I’ve combined entertainment with education to revive a love for reading,” she shared.

Trician emphasizes the importance of Black history in her lessons. She believes that when children understand their heritage, their confidence soars. “When you ask children their favorite book, many can’t answer,” she noted. Her workshops feature stories by Black authors and showcase diverse characters and images.

“I want children to see themselves in these stories,” she explained. After reading, they engage in discussions and learn historical facts tied to the story. To keep things lively, she incorporates music, dance, and movement — skills she honed through 17 years of professional dance training.

Trician also brings joy to children’s events. “I offer games, dance routines, sing-alongs, and storytime,” she said. “Kids love to feel included and seen.” For birthday parties, she tailors stories to match the theme, often selecting historical narratives. Recently, she created a playlist of reimagined nursery rhymes, prompting interest from parents who wanted to purchase the songs.

For her entertainment services, the package for up to 30 children costs $300. For an extra $150, kids receive loot bags. Each bag includes a book by a Black author that aligns with the party’s theme, along with educational toys, coloring sheets, and crayons.
