SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – If Donald Trump wins a second term, it will shake up American politics. Experts are curious about the extent of this potential impact.
Grover Cleveland is the only president to have served two non-consecutive terms, doing so in 1892. Many believe if Trump gets a second chance, it will mark a pivotal moment in history.
Dr. Kevin Pybas, a political science professor at Missouri State University, suggests that Trump’s victory stems from more than just changes on his end. He believes the Democratic Party’s missteps may have cost them the election.
“Trump hasn’t changed much. The Democrats misfired. Biden presented himself as a moderate, but in reality, he hasn’t governed that way,” Dr. Pybas explains. “There’s a lot of frustration with the Democrats. They didn’t have a strong primary season, which meant they pushed the vice president—who isn’t very popular—into a leading role.”
So, where does the political landscape head from here? Dr. Pybas points out that it’s a tricky question. Political scientists aren’t entirely sure what a Trump administration means yet.
“It’s hard to grasp the full picture while we’re still inside it. Two decades from now, we’ll look back and understand it better,” he says.
Dr. Pybas also suggests that the Democratic Party will need to regroup and find solid leadership moving forward. “It’s always interesting to see how the losing side evaluates itself after an election. Right now, the Democrats are facing some inner conflict. They lost to someone who had been beaten just four years prior,” he adds.
On the Republican side, the future depends on how Trump’s second term unfolds. If it’s successful, it might pave the way for future leaders. However, if things go south, it’s unclear who will step in to lead the party.
“In a few years, everyone will look back and judge this administration. If Trump manages to control inflation or helps resolve global conflicts, he will solidify his influence,” Dr. Pybas notes.
As for overall U.S. politics, the future remains uncertain. The midterm elections will play a crucial role in shaping what happens next. Political experts suggest keeping a close eye on developments in the coming years.
