Yangpyeong County Hosts Engaging Climate Empathy Forum
On December 26, Yangpyeong County in Gyeonggi Province held its first “Climate Empathy Forum” at the Mulbit Theater. This event was all about connecting residents, experts, and local organizations to tackle climate issues together.
The forum’s theme was “Yangpyeong We Create, Tomorrow We Change.” It kicked off with the session “Climate: Changing the Temperature of Our Lives.” Here, data from the “Our Neighborhood Climate Research Center” was shared, highlighting actions taken by local residents. Participants tracked temperatures and recorded their carbon-neutral habits over the summer, demonstrating citizen-led efforts in climate action.
The second session, “Opening a Climate Community Together: The Future of Yangpyeong,” featured expert talks and panel discussions. Panelists emphasized how important it is for residents to be involved in local climate policies and practical solutions. According to recent studies, communities that engage their citizens in environmental decision-making see better outcomes. In fact, a survey by the National Academies of Sciences found that public participation can enhance trust and cooperation in climate initiatives.
During the forum, attendees enjoyed various activities, including book recommendations on environmental topics and hands-on projects for upcycling toys. A toy donation campaign held beforehand also encouraged community involvement, creating a buzz around climate action.
Governor Jeon Jinseon remarked, “This forum shifted the focus from government-led discussions to a collaborative approach with residents.” He aims to further establish platforms that support ongoing dialogues about the climate crisis and carbon neutrality within the community.
