NEW GLARUS — Caring For Kids, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to helping local children, is excited to share the news of a generous grant. This funding will provide weekend food backpacks and classroom snacks for New Glarus students. The grant comes from the Frank J. Schiesser Family Fund at the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin. This foundation plays a crucial role in supporting various essential initiatives, ranging from the arts to education and public health.
Dr. Laura Eicher, Principal of New Glarus Elementary School and Secretary of Caring For Kids, highlighted how valuable these funds are. She mentioned that every dollar from the grant goes directly toward purchasing food for students. Between January and November 2025, the Food For Kids Program managed to distribute 2,408 weekend food backpacks and 76,407 classroom snacks.
Dr. Eicher noted, “These programs help ensure that students have enough food over the weekend, so they return to school ready to learn. We aim to help families with dignity by providing necessary resources to all students in New Glarus.”
Recent studies show that food insecurity can significantly affect a child’s ability to learn and thrive. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as of 2021, around 10.5% of households with children experienced food insecurity. Programs like the Food For Kids initiative are vital in addressing these critical needs in communities.
The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin serves nine counties: Crawford, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Rock, Sauk, Vernon, and Walworth. They are committed to improving lives and strengthening communities throughout the region.
