The Vande Bharat sleeper train has recently made headlines by completing high-speed trials, a key step before it starts running in India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw showcased its stability during a test run, where glasses of water remained untouched as the train reached speeds of 180 kilometers per hour.
These trials were conducted on the Kota–Nagda route, supervised by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Vaishnaw shared a video of the run on social media, highlighting that not a single drop of water spilled during the speed test. This moment was a proud demonstration of the train’s advanced technology.
This new sleeper train aims to revolutionize long-distance overnight travel in India. Unlike the existing Vande Bharat services, which have only chair cars, this version will feature fully air-conditioned sleeping berths. The upgraded amenities promise a more comfortable journey for passengers.
Two prototypes were built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bangalore and are undergoing thorough testing. Although the train can operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, it was tested at higher speeds to ensure safety and comfort under challenging conditions.
The Indian Railways plans to introduce over 200 such sleeper trains in the coming years, signaling a major shift in long-distance travel. The manufacturing involves collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory and various private and international partners, ensuring a broad base of support.
Each prototype consists of 16 coaches, including air-conditioned three-tier, two-tier, and first-class compartments. Passengers can expect cushioned bedding, improved access to upper berths, low-lighting options for nighttime, CCTV for safety, charging points, and modern display systems.
Furthermore, the trains will feature bio-vacuum toilets, shower cubicles in first-class sections, accessible facilities, and a dedicated baby care unit. Safety is also a priority, with the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision system and energy-efficient regenerative braking.
This milestone reflects the Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing travel experiences and modernizing its operations. With a focus on sustainable infrastructure, the Vande Bharat sleeper train represents a significant leap in Indian railway innovation.
