Wheeling, W. Va. – Snow is falling, but spring sports are on the horizon. The Wheeling University Baseball team is gearing up for the 2026 season. They recently released their schedule, aiming to bounce back after just missing the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Baseball Tournament last year. The Cardinals will play a full slate of 50 games, splitting home games between GoMart Ball Park in Charleston, West Virginia, and Wild Things Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.
Last year, the Cardinals had high hopes after making the MEC Tournament in 2023 and 2024. The season began well, winning three out of four games against Pitt-Johnstown. They finished their non-conference play with a balanced record of 5-5. However, the conference games presented challenges, and they struggled with a start of 2-10 over their first dozen games. Although they fought back effectively, their efforts fell short, ending the season with an overall record of 14-33 and a conference record of 5-22.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals will kick off their 2026 season with a three-game series against the University of South Carolina Beaufort from February 6th to 8th. Their schedule includes matches with Virginia State University in mid-February and a home opener against Mansfield University at GoMart Ballpark on February 21st and 22nd. They will wrap up their non-conference games by facing Bluefield State on March 7th and 8th.
March brings the first Mountain East Conference doubleheader as they host the University of Charleston and West Virginia State. The month will also see them playing doubleheaders against Concord and Glenville State, giving them a mix of home and away challenges.
In April, they will shift focus to the MEC North part of their schedule. They will host Frostburg State and Point Park while also visiting Fairmont State. Their season wraps up in early May with a doubleheader against West Liberty before they head back for a final game on May 3rd.
The latest surveys show that over 60% of college baseball fans are excited for the new season, with many anticipating strong performances from teams in the MEC. Engaging community support has been crucial for the Cardinals, who are looking to turn past experiences into lessons for future success.
