Food Pantries Striving for More Support Amid Increased Demand
In Mosinee, Wisconsin, many people are feeling the pinch of rising grocery prices and changes to SNAP benefits. As a result, more families are turning to food pantries for assistance. However, these services are in need of additional support.
Typically, food pantries receive a surge of donations around Thanksgiving. The challenge arises during the quieter months, making it difficult to keep shelves stocked. The Community Center of Hope is aware of this issue and aims to address it by expanding its hours in January and seeking more volunteers.
Executive Director Amy Bergstrom explains, “We’d love to have at least five volunteers during shifts. It’s crucial to have a sufficient number of people helping in the pantry.” Volunteers play essential roles, such as checking in guests, stocking shelves, and assisting shoppers. Currently, the pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with new Monday shifts starting on January 12.
Chase Pemble, a dedicated volunteer, shares, “I give just two hours a week. It doesn’t feel like much, but it means a lot to those facing food insecurity.” The pantry often struggles to restock its shelves as donations decrease, which only compounds the challenges.
Bergstrom notes, “We want people to leave here with food and a good experience.” The pantry is also looking to expand its services to help with issues like childcare and rent assistance, recognizing that many community members are strapped for time.
This approach reflects a growing trend among food assistance programs. A recent study by the Food Research & Action Center found that 83% of food pantries are expanding their services to meet the needs of their clients better. This includes offering additional resources and support systems to address the underlying causes of food insecurity.
The Community Center of Hope is typically open year-round but will close on New Year’s Day. As they prepare for increased demand in the new year, they hope to engage more volunteers to enhance their efforts.
