2025 had some fantastic films that really stood out. Here’s a rundown of my ten favorites that brought laughter, drama, and even some deep insights.

10. The Naked Gun

This film had me laughing harder than I have in years. With spot-on jokes, Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson shine. It reminds us: be careful when summoning a snowman on a romantic trip!

9. Nouvelle Vague

Start with Breathless, a French New Wave treasure. Then dive into Richard Linklater’s take on its making. Together, they show the beauty of creative rebellion and the need for constant renewal in cinema.

8. Boys Go To Jupiter

This wild animated film plays between Christmas and New Year’s, delivering surreal humor. It’s not for everyone, but if you embrace its quirky vibe, you’ll find a unique charm in it.

7. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Rian Johnson delivers again! This script is his smartest yet. It’s packed with clever twists and explores themes of faith and power, making you want to revisit it to catch all the hidden details.

6. It Was Just An Accident

Iranian director Jafar Panahi, recently sentenced to prison for this film, crafted a powerful political thriller. Even in oppressive circumstances, he weaves in tenderness and humor, creating a deeply human experience.

5. Marty Supreme

This film captures the thrill of tension throughout its runtime. The main character’s chaotic life keeps you glued to the screen. As he struggles to regain control, you can’t help but be drawn into his journey.

4. Weapons

Beginning with a chilling mystery, this film keeps you on edge. Beneath its unsettling exterior, it deals with grief and community responses to tragedy, all while keeping a playful tone that blends suspense and fun.

3. One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson’s work in this film is nothing short of exhilarating. It tackles today’s political landscape while staying thoroughly entertaining. This is what cinema is really about!

2. Sinners

This film connects the blues culture to a unique vampire story, grounding it in modern American folklore. A stunning musical sequence transports viewers, showcasing how ambitious mainstream cinema can be when it aims for depth.

1. Train Dreams

While I may be biased, this film feels like a treasure for North Idahoans. Set in our own backyard, it brings our history to life with stunning storytelling. It’s based on a cherished book, and seeing it on screen filled me with awe and gratitude.

Honorable Mentions: Sentimental Value missed my top 10, while Hamnet sounds promising for awards season. Other fun watches included Caught Stealing, Black Bag, and the documentary SNL: 50 Years of Music. Don’t miss the Nine Inch Nails soundtrack for Tron: Ares—the film might be lacking, but the music shines.
