Discover ‘Dracula’s Chivito’: The Largest Planetary Nursery Ever Discovered by Astronomers!

About 1,000 light-years from Earth, there’s a massive disk of gas and dust surrounding a young star, creating new planets. This cosmic structure, known as “Dracula’s Chivito,” is the largest planet-forming disk ever discovered. It’s not only huge but also behaves in surprising ways.

This disk extends nearly 400 billion miles (640 billion kilometers)—40 times the size of our solar system. First spotted in 2016, it has now been imaged by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. These new images showcase a chaotic environment with filaments of material extending further than expected. Interestingly, these features are concentrated on one side of the disk, making it look quite lopsided.

Kristina Monsch, a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Astrophysics and lead author of the study, highlighted how unusual these findings are. “The detail we’re observing is rare for disks where planets form. The new Hubble images show that planet nurseries can be much more active than we thought,” she commented.

Traditionally, scientists believed these disks were orderly and calm, where planets slowly came together over millions of years. However, recent studies challenge that view. The disk’s uneven filaments suggest dynamic processes might be at play—like gas and dust interactions creating a lively and unpredictable environment.

Joshua Bennett Lovell, also from the Center for Astrophysics, added, “Seeing such an asymmetric disk is surprising. Hubble gives us a close look at the chaotic building processes of new planets, which we are just starting to understand.”

The disk itself hides a young star or possibly a binary star system within. It contains about 10 to 30 times the mass of Jupiter. This means there’s ample material to form several gas giant planets, making Dracula’s Chivito a scaled-up version of what our solar system was like 4.6 billion years ago.

In Monsch’s words, “Dracula’s Chivito could host a vast planetary system. While the methods of planet formation may differ in large disks, the basic processes are likely similar.” This structure serves as a natural laboratory to explore how planets develop in various environments.
