Exciting News: First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launching Between Guwahati and Howrah This January!

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw recently revealed exciting news: the first-ever Vande Bharat sleeper train is set to run between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal. This new service is a significant step forward for Indian Railways.

The trial and testing of the sleeper train have been completed, and it will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month. This train aims to transform travel for passengers across the region.

Key districts that will benefit from this service include Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah in West Bengal.

The train boasts 16 coaches, including 11 three-tier AC coaches, 4 two-tier AC coaches, and 1 first-class AC coach. It can carry around 823 passengers. With a top speed of 180 kmph, it promises a swift journey.

One standout feature of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is its focus on comfort. The berths are designed to be ergonomic, with better cushioning and a smooth entry through automatic doors. Security is also a priority; CCTV cameras are installed in all coaches for enhanced safety.

Vaishnaw emphasized that the train offers a high-quality travel experience for overnight journeys. It’s designed to leave in the evening and arrive at its destination the following morning, making it convenient for travelers.

Food lovers will appreciate the region-specific cuisine offered on board. Passengers departing from Guwahati can indulge in authentic Assamese dishes, while those from Kolkata will enjoy traditional Bengali delicacies.

In terms of safety, the train includes the modern KAVACH system for better emergency management and features an advanced fire safety system to protect passengers.

This development isn’t just a technical achievement; it’s also a reflection of changing travel needs in India. According to recent statistics from the Indian Ministry of Railways, sleeper services have grown by 15% in the past year. This trend shows an increasing demand for comfortable long-distance travel options.

As Indian Railways looks ahead, 2026 is expected to be a transformative year, with many passenger-focused initiatives on the horizon. The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train marks a new chapter in making rail travel more efficient and enjoyable for everyone.
