On January 4, the lowest temperature dropped to 7.8 degrees Celsius in Jashore, while the warmest spot was Teknaf at 26.5 degrees Celsius, according to the BMD. Areas like Tetulia and Dinajpur also recorded low temperatures of 9 and 9.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The Rangpur region has faced a prolonged cold spell for the last ten days, causing thick fog, especially in the mornings. This weather has disrupted daily life for many, impacting agriculture and livestock.
People living along riverbanks, particularly those in poverty-stricken areas, are struggling without sufficient warm clothing. Farmers like Alamgir Miah from Rangpur express difficulties staying warm in their homes as cold winds enter continuously. Others, like Ansar Ali from Kolkonda Union, note how the early mornings and evenings are especially tough, leaving many with coughs and colds.
Health officials report an uptick in illnesses related to the cold. Dr. Mahfuzar Rahman Bandhan from Rangpur Medical College Hospital highlights that pneumonia and respiratory issues are on the rise, particularly among children and the elderly. He urges parents to keep their kids warm and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
Local meteorologists predict that the cold wave may persist, with night temperatures expected to remain between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius until early January. They caution that additional cold waves could strike in the coming weeks.
