Meet Team Sweden’s 2026 Winter Olympics Roster: Star Players Ekman-Larsson and Wallstedt Lead the Charge!

Sweden has announced its roster for the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026. The team aims to secure its first gold medal since 2006, when they last triumphed in Turin.

This new lineup is similar to the one from the recent 4 Nations tournament, but some fresh faces have joined. Notable forwards like Gabriel Landeskog from the Colorado Avalanche, Pontus Holmberg from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Alexander Wennberg from the San Jose Sharks will feature prominently. However, players Gustav Nyquist and Viktor Arvidsson did not make the cut.

Coach Sam Hallam expressed confidence in Holmberg and Wennberg. He noted, “They are both very smart tactically and can play multiple roles. Holmberg has shown strength in his game, while Wennberg consistently makes the right plays.” His praise highlights their growing importance to the team.

On defense, Philip Broberg (St. Louis Blues) and Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Toronto Maple Leafs) will bolster the squad, with Mattias Ekholm (Edmonton Oilers) missing from the 4 Nations lineup.

Victor Hedman, a key defenseman from the Lightning, is recovering from elbow surgery but aims to be fit for the Olympics. “We’re monitoring Victor closely,” Hallam said. “It’s reassuring to know he’s doing everything possible to return.” His experience will be vital if he can join the team.

In net, Jesper Wallstedt from the Minnesota Wild will compete, supported by the strong rookie season he has had. Coach Hallam praised Wallstedt’s rapid improvement and synergy with fellow goalie Filip Gustavsson, emphasizing that both know each other’s habits well.

This year marks a return of NHL players to the Olympics for the first time since 2014, which adds significance to Sweden’s campaign. Erik Karlsson, a defenseman for the Pittsburgh Penguins and 2014 silver medalist, expressed enthusiasm about being chosen. “It’s a huge honor,” he stated. “I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.”

The format of the tournament includes 12 teams divided into groups. Each will play three preliminary games. The top three group finishers and the best second-place team will advance to the quarterfinals, while the others will face elimination rounds. The gold medal match is set for February 22.

Sweden will kick off its journey against Team Italy on February 11, followed by matches against Team Finland and Team Slovakia on the 13th and 14th, respectively.

As Sweden prepares for the Games, the excitement in the hockey community is palpable. Many fans are hopeful this team can bring home the gold, drawing on the strong legacy of Swedish hockey talent. Historically, Sweden has been a powerhouse in international hockey, often showcasing players who shine at the highest levels. This year’s roster aims to revive that storied tradition.
