A solo hiker was killed by a mountain lion on a remote trail in Colorado on New Year’s Day, marking a tragic event that raised concerns among locals. Just a few weeks earlier, another runner, Gary Messina, had encountered a mountain lion on the same trail. He was startled when he saw the lion’s eyes shining in his headlamp.
In a desperate bid for survival, Messina resorted to throwing his phone and kicking dirt. Eventually, he grabbed a stick and defended himself long enough for the lion to retreat. “I was scared for my life,” he shared, emphasizing the fear he felt during the encounter.
Authorities confirmed that the woman’s body, found later, had wounds consistent with a mountain lion attack. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. Following the incident, wildlife officials killed two mountain lions in the area, hoping to identify whether they were involved in the attack. They plan to conduct a necropsy, which will include testing for diseases like rabies.
Interestingly, mountain lion encounters aren’t uncommon in this region which is known for its rugged terrain and dense forests. However, attacks on humans are rare. In fact, the last fatal attack in Colorado occurred over two decades ago. A notable case was in 1999 when a young boy disappeared in the wilderness, with only remnants of his clothing found years later.
Although mountain lions usually avoid humans, they can be dangerous, especially as urban areas expand into their habitats. According to Byron Weckworth, conservation expert, interactions increase as more people venture into wildlife territories. To stay safe, he advises sticking to groups, keeping children close, and avoiding hiking during dawn and dusk when lions are most active.
Mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, are agile predators, mainly feeding on deer. Colorado houses about 3,800 to 4,400 of these animals, which are legally hunted under state regulations.
If you find yourself in an encounter, it’s crucial not to run. Maintaining eye contact and appearing large can deter the lion. Last year, there was a tragic incident in Northern California where two brothers were stalked by a lion; one of them didn’t survive.
