Bill Guerin believes strongly in the importance of team chemistry. He thinks it played a key role in choosing players for the United States team at the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026.
As the general manager for the Minnesota Wild, Guerin put together the U.S. Olympic roster. He was impressed with how well the players worked together during the 4 Nations Face-Off last February. This time, he’s sticking with a similar group as they aim for their first gold medal since 1980.
“I really liked our team’s play,” Guerin shared after announcing the roster. “Everyone was on the same page. They followed the game plan put forth by Mike Sullivan and his coaches. But for me, the chemistry stood out the most.”
Guerin emphasized that the team’s chemistry allowed players to embrace different roles. Many had to take on tasks they didn’t usually have to do in the NHL, like accepting less ice time or adjusting their roles. This willingness to adapt was vital to their success.
Among the 25 players named to the roster, 21 had participated in the 4 Nations tournament. The U.S. team had a strong showing, winning three out of four games. They faced Canada in a thrilling championship match, ultimately losing 3-2 in overtime. However, they had previously secured a significant 3-1 victory against Canada in Montreal, highlighting their potential.
