Behind the Scenes of ‘RHOSLC’: Mary Cosby’s Directors Unpack Affair and Extortion Allegations – Unveiling the ‘Playbook’

Elli Hakami and Julian P. Hobbs have created a new docuseries for TLC called The Cult of the Real Housewife. The show explores whether Mary Cosby, a star of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, runs a mind control cult. Hobbs notes that inspiration for their investigation came from the original Bravo series itself.

As RHOSLC began its second season, co-star Whitney Rose hinted at Mary being a cult leader. This revelation added weight to the series when whistleblower Cameron Williams, a former church member, shared his experiences.

Hobbs and Hakami wanted to dig deeper beyond what the reality show presented. They believed there was more to uncover about Mary’s life and her church, Faith Temple.

Allegations in the docuseries include claims that Mary and her husband, Bishop Robert Cosby Sr., manipulated congregants to give up their savings for luxurious living. Additionally, it was alleged that Mary had an affair with Williams, who allegedly lost around $300,000 because of his loyalty to the couple.

Williams, who appeared alongside Mary and her co-stars in RHOSLC, died shortly after due to complications from surgery. His death adds emotional weight to the story, as many former church members grapple with complex feelings of guilt over their past devotion.

Many former congregants, including Mary’s own family, found it difficult to speak out. They had long viewed Mary and Bishop Cosby as spiritual leaders. Hakami highlights the deep trust the congregation placed in them, which left followers feeling conflicted about exposing alleged abuse of power.

The investigation gained traction, particularly online, reflecting growing public curiosity about the supposed cult dynamics. Many users took to social media to voice their opinion, paralleling the show’s drama with real questions about Mary’s lifestyle and leadership.

Online discussions also surfaced around an alleged affair between Mary and Williams. A recording played in the docuseries features Williams discussing their extravagant trips and luxurious gifts, revealing feelings of manipulation and regret.

To provide insights into the psychological aspects of such dynamics, cult expert Steven Hassan also weighed in. He explained that various psychological principles can lead individuals to fall under coercive control, underscoring how anyone can be influenced by persuasive tactics.

Despite the growing scrutiny, Mary Cosby maintains her role in RHOSLC, with little mention of cult allegations in recent seasons. Hobbs and Hakami aimed to challenge this narrative, seeking to shed light on perspectives that have often gone unheard.

As for Mary and her husband, attempts to get a response from them regarding the docuseries allegations have been met with silence. Hobbs believes the release of the series could spark significant conversations and help balance the narrative. “We’re trying to give voice to those who have been overlooked,” he says.

This docuseries is not just an exploration of reality TV drama but a deeper look into complex relationships and the power of belief, reminding viewers that the line between entertainment and reality can often blur.
