Alzheimer’s disease remains a challenging condition with limited treatment options, and its progression often feels certain. Because of this, researchers frequently look into lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise, that could help lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. A recent study from the Federal University of São Paulo highlights the positive effects of aerobic exercise on brain health.
The findings of this study are promising. Researchers noted that aerobic exercise can target Alzheimer’s disease right from its core. Alzheimer’s is often linked to the buildup of harmful proteins in the brain, including amyloid plaques and tau tangles. These lead to increased inflammation and neuron damage.
In the study, aged rats participated in an eight-week aerobic exercise program. The results were significant: the exercise led to a 76% decrease in amyloid plaques and a 63% decrease in tau tangles compared to their sedentary counterparts. In addition to reducing harmful proteins, the exercise program also helped increase the number of healthy neurons by 2.5 times. Furthermore, brain inflammation decreased by 55-68% in the exercising rats.
The study sheds light on how exercise benefits brain health. It helps clear the brain of harmful proteins and promotes better communication between brain cells. One key player in this process is microglia, which are the brain’s immune cells. They work to remove cellular debris and help reduce inflammation. Exercise enhances the functions of these cells and helps regulate how the brain manages iron, which can protect neurons from damage.
While further research is necessary, these findings strongly suggest that incorporating aerobic exercise into daily routines could be a beneficial strategy for reducing Alzheimer’s risk.
