This year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala will be a bit quieter as Leonardo DiCaprio won’t be attending. He was supposed to receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his role in “One Battle After Another.” Unfortunately, he’s stuck in St. Barts due to airspace restrictions from a geopolitical situation in Venezuela.
A spokesperson for the festival shared, “Leonardo DiCaprio is unable to join us in person tonight due to unexpected travel disruptions. While we will miss celebrating with him, we are thrilled to honor his remarkable contributions to cinema.” His role in the film has been getting a lot of buzz, especially as he plays an ex-revolutionary trying to save his daughter.
On the same day, President Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been taken into U.S. custody following a military operation. This situation has affected air travel across Southern California, prompting the Palm Springs airport to issue a ground stop for outgoing flights.
Despite DiCaprio’s absence, the gala will still have many stars in attendance. Honorees include Timothée Chalamet, Rose Byrne, and Michael B. Jordan, among others.
Interestingly, DiCaprio is in the running for another Oscar for Best Actor, thanks to his powerful performance. “One Battle After Another” has won accolades, including recently being named Best Picture by the National Society of Film Critics.
As of now, independent film has been gaining momentum. In 2023, around 20% of film revenue came from indie movies, showing audiences are eager for diverse storytelling.
