Indian Railways is taking a big step forward by introducing its first Vande Bharat sleeper train this January. This train is designed for long overnight journeys and will initially run between Guwahati and Kolkata. It promises to offer passengers comfortable, air-conditioned travel and shorter journey times through important districts in Assam and West Bengal.
The Vande Bharat sleeper is a semi-high-speed train, capable of speeds up to 180 km/h, although real speeds will vary based on track conditions. It features 16 coaches, including various classes of air-conditioned berths, accommodating over 820 passengers. In the coming months, Indian Railways plans to add eight more trains to this network, aiming to enhance high-speed overnight travel across the country.
The design of the coaches focuses on passenger comfort. There are cushioned berths, easy access to upper tiers, and sealed gangways to keep the train’s temperature comfortable. Modern bathrooms, showers, and features for passengers with disabilities align this service with global standards.
Safety is a top priority too. The Vande Bharat sleeper includes the KAVACH anti-collision system and energy-efficient regenerative braking. It also has advanced signalling and automatic doors for reliable operation.
Experts believe this new train can greatly improve regional connectivity. Faster travel between Guwahati and Kolkata will facilitate business and tourism, thereby boosting local economies. It presents a chance to enhance interaction among markets and service sectors along the route.
Moreover, this initiative is part of a larger vision for India’s rail infrastructure. By promoting energy-efficient rail travel, it aims to shift passengers from road and air transport to more sustainable rail options. Urban planners suggest that linking these services with local transport will further improve access for everyone, making travel easier and more equitable.
In the years to come, more sleeper trains will expand Indian Railways’ overnight services. This plan emphasizes not just passenger convenience but also a commitment to creating a greener transport system for the future.
These developments reflect Indian Railways’ dedication to modernizing transport while addressing the growing demands of mobility and economic integration.
