STONY BROOK, NY – The North Carolina A&T men’s basketball team fell just short in a nail-biter against the Stony Brook Seawolves, losing 81-80. The game ended with Lewis Walker missing a key jump shot that could have secured the win for A&T.
This loss was the Aggies’ third consecutive close call in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), dropping their record to 7-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play. In earlier games, they allowed opponents to score over 80 points, with UNC Wilmington putting up 87 and Northeastern scoring 85.
Stony Brook had a strong start, leading 50-39 at halftime, thanks to their 54.5% shooting from the field and effective three-point shooting. A dunk from Tomas Valentiny pushed their lead to 60-45 early in the second half. However, the Aggies responded with newfound defensive energy, outscoring the Seawolves 16-4 in a crucial stretch.
Coach Monté Ross acknowledged the team’s defensive improvement but stressed the need for consistency. “We need to play with this intensity for a full 40 minutes,” he said. After tying the game at 69-69, the Aggies found themselves battling back and forth until the final minutes.
Despite their efforts, the Aggies were trailing 79-72 with just three and a half minutes to play. They rallied with four consecutive successful free throws and a spectacular layup from Dwayne Pierce, narrowing the margin to just one point. Even though they fought hard, missed opportunities and turnovers haunted A&T in the closing moments.
With one final chance to win, Walker couldn’t convert after a tough rebound. Coach Ross reassured him, saying, “You’ll have plenty of chances down the road.” It’s a reminder of the ups and downs in a competitive season.
The Aggies did hold a significant advantage on the boards, grabbing a season-high 23 offensive rebounds compared to Stony Brook’s 25. KJ Debrick had an impressive game with 11 points and 10 rebounds, illustrating the team’s potential inside the paint. “Our bigs are essential to our strategy,” Ross noted, referring to Debrick and his teammates, who often take turns shining in each game.
Walker led with 16 points while Pierce added 15 and Weluche-Ume contributed 14. Meanwhile, Stony Brook’s Erik Pratt scored 23 points, helping his team improve to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in CAA play.
Looking ahead, the Aggies will strive for their first conference win against Elon this Thursday. The challenge remains, but with growing confidence, they aim to turn the tide in the CAA.
