The New York Yankees have signed infielder Paul DeJong to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, as confirmed by ESPN. If he makes the team, DeJong could earn $1 million.
At 32 years old, DeJong brings nine years of experience to the table. He made his mark in Major League Baseball by stepping in as the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting shortstop in 2017. That same year, he was a strong contender for National League Rookie of the Year. Two years later, he was an All-Star after hitting 30 home runs and achieving a bWAR of 5.2. However, recent seasons have not been kind to him, as he has struggled to match that level of performance.
In the past season with the Washington Nationals, DeJong’s batting average dropped to .228, and he managed only six home runs and a .642 OPS over 57 games. He played various positions, starting 32 games at third base, along with time at second base, shortstop, and even first base.
This signing follows the Yankees’ recent contract with veteran Amed Rosario, aimed at creating a balanced infield lineup. With starting shortstop Anthony Volpe recovering from shoulder surgery, the team is looking for depth in its roster. Other infielders like Jose Caballero and Oswaldo Cabrera are also options, though Cabrera is recovering from a serious knee injury.
Injury statistics reveal that players like Volpe are increasingly at risk due to the demanding nature of modern baseball. A 2022 study showed that roughly 50% of MLB players experience significant injuries during their careers.
As the Yankees gear up for spring training, the addition of DeJong might provide the team with valuable versatility and depth in the infield.
