Withings is making waves again with its new smart scale, the Body Scan 2, priced at $599.95. This device is designed to focus more on heart and metabolic health, offering an advanced way to track your well-being right from your bathroom.
The Body Scan 2 features a unique design with eight electrodes on the scale and four more integrated into a retractable handle. This setup allows it to gather data from both the upper and lower body, making it more comprehensive than typical smart scales that only track foot data.
This latest model tracks more than just your weight or heart rate. It includes a two-minute “longevity assessment” that evaluates over 60 health markers across several categories: heart function, hypertension risk, artery health, cellular health, and metabolic efficiency. This information helps users gain insight into how well they’re aging and how their health is evolving.
Antoine Joussain, Withings’ product management director, emphasizes the vision behind the scale. “We want people to gather impactful health data every time they weigh in,” he explains. The scale includes a simplified Health Trajectory score that gives users a quick understanding of their health status, breaking it down into easily digestible indicators.
Interestingly, Withings’ approach is not new. Similar metrics appeared in devices like the Whoop 5.0 and the Oura Ring, tracking various health aspects for improved aging comparisons.
What sets the Body Scan 2 apart is its non-invasive method of assessing metabolic health. It uses bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) to assess sweat from your feet, which provides indicators of metabolic function. “We stimulate sweat glands with a small current,” Joussain says. The response helps indicate the health of those glands, which links to diabetes complications based on user feedback.
Data privacy remains a key issue. The Body Scan 2 will be compliant with European and American privacy standards, like GDPR and HIPAA, to ensure that personal health data is handled securely. However, two features, including hypertension notifications and EKG capabilities, will require FDA clearance, a process that can be lengthy.
