NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Shea Ralph is on a mission to elevate Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball program. Recently, she successfully recruited guard Mikayla Blakes, aiming for the “uncommon” feat of returning the Commodores to elite status.
On Sunday, they took a significant step by securing a 65-61 victory over No. 5 LSU. This win marked Vanderbilt’s first triumph against a top-five team since the 2008-09 season and a milestone for Ralph in her fifth season of rebuilding this once-great program. With a perfect 15-0 record, the Commodores are set to enter the top 10 rankings for the first time since 2007.
Ralph shared, “For me, it is part of the journey. I want my players to enjoy this process, too, because there will be tough days ahead.” Her commitment is evident, especially after overcoming many challenges in the past.
Memorial Gym buzzed with excitement as 6,576 fans—significantly more than their usual 2,583—cheered for Vanderbilt. The atmosphere reminded Ralph of the high-energy crowds from past games against rivals like South Carolina and Tennessee.
The game itself was thrilling. Vanderbilt led after the first quarter and finished strong, outscoring LSU 8-3 in the final minutes. When the final buzzer sounded, the Commodores celebrated with their fans as “Callin’ Baton Rouge” played in the background.
This victory is particularly sweet for Ralph, reminiscent of the 2009 win over then-No. 3 Auburn, which propelled Vanderbilt to an SEC tournament championship. However, it wasn’t just about the win; it was also alumni weekend. Former coach Jim Foster and players from the 1992-93 Final Four team were honored and shared inspiring stories with the current squad.
Blakes has become a key figure in this resurgence. She leads the SEC in scoring and was drawn to Ralph’s vision. “It’s easier to win at top programs, but I want to do the uncommon thing,” she stated, believing in her teammates and the support at Vanderbilt.
Even LSU’s coach, Kim Mulkey, was impressed, praising Blakes for her energy and determination. “She never gets tired. She’s one of the best-conditioned players I’ve seen,” Mulkey noted.
While this victory is a highlight, Ralph is focused on the future. The Commodores will host Missouri on Thursday, reminding her team, “It’s still only January. We have a long way to go.”
