A cold wave is currently affecting 12 districts in Bangladesh, causing temperatures to drop. Recently, the lowest recorded temperature was 8.4 degrees Celsius in Ishwardi, Pabna. Just a day prior, Srimangal, Moulvibazar, saw a slightly higher low of 9.5 degrees Celsius.
The meteorological department indicates a slight increase in temperature today, but that won’t last long. Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir shared that after a brief rise, temperatures are expected to drop again. Mild cold waves occur when temperatures are between 8.1 and 10 degrees Celsius. A moderate cold wave is between 6.1 and 8 degrees, while a severe cold wave falls between 4.1 and 6 degrees. Anything below that is classified as a very severe cold wave.
These cold conditions have led to warnings in the Rajshahi Division and nearby districts. The meteorological office forecasts that at least five cold waves could hit this month, one of which may reach severe levels.
Interestingly, cold waves aren’t just a weather phenomenon; they impact daily life. Hospitals often see a rise in respiratory illnesses during these spells, particularly among vulnerable populations.
