An Australian man struck gold—literally—when he found a treasure worth $160,000 using just a metal detector. This 4.6-kilogram rock, discovered in Victoria’s renowned “Golden Triangle,” contains an impressive amount of pure gold.

A weekend hobby turned into a life-changing moment for this anonymous prospector. With a metal detector priced at only $800, he found the gold-filled rock in the region between Ballarat, Bendigo, and St. Arnaud. After bringing part of his treasure to Lucky Strike Gold, a local shop, the store operator, Darren Kamp, couldn’t believe his eyes.
“When he asked if it was worth $10,000, I told him to try $100,000,” Kamp recalled. The prospector was thrilled; his wife would be happy too!
Interestingly, the prospector left the other half of the treasure at home, covered in dirt and still unrecognizable.
The nugget, later dubbed the “Lucky Strike,” is notable for its size—about 2.6 kilograms of it is pure gold. Kamp pointed out that the treasure got accidentally split during extraction, but its value remained unaffected. He later purchased the nugget, which has since gained popularity in local prospecting circles.
Kamp believes luck and effort are key ingredients for such finds. “It’s like Tattslotto: you’re never going to win unless you’ve got a ticket.”
Victoria has a rich mining history. The same area was where the “Welcome Stranger,” the largest gold nugget ever found, was unearthed in 1869. That nugget weighed an astonishing 72 kilograms!
Right now, gold prices are hitting record highs, which adds financial significance to this discovery. Current estimates from the Geological Survey of Victoria suggest up to 2.1 million kilograms of gold might still be hidden beneath the region’s surface.
