Unlocking Growth: How Indian Railways is Investing 80% of Its Capital Expenditure in the First Three Quarters of FY26

Indian Railways is making significant strides in modernizing its services. By the end of December 2025, it has utilized 80.54% of its Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) of ₹2,52,200 crore, spending ₹2,03,138 crore. This marks a 6.54% increase from the same time last year, highlighting a focused approach to development.

The funds have mainly gone toward enhancing safety, improving infrastructure, and upgrading passenger amenities. Notably, 84% of the budget for safety-related projects has already been used. For capacity boosts, 69% of the allocated ₹1,09,238 crore has been spent. Passenger services have also seen a strong investment, with 80% of the budget utilized, totaling ₹9,575 crore by December 2025.

These efforts reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to providing faster and safer travel while remaining affordable. Over the past decade, investments have led to the introduction of 164 Vande Bharat train services and 30 Amrit Bharat train services. The implementation of the Kavach automatic train protection system and nearly complete electrification of the broad-gauge network show how far the organization has come.

As a potential game-changer, the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper train is set to revolutionize long-distance travel.

According to a recent report by the Ministry of Railways, these trends indicate that the current GBS expenditure plan is progressing well. Infrastructure projects are moving forward quickly, suggesting that the targets for FY 2025-26 will be met.

In a survey by the Railways Ministry, 78% of passengers reported improved satisfaction with rail services, emphasizing the positive impact of ongoing improvements.

Experts note that when governments invest heavily in infrastructure, it not only boosts transportation but also stimulates local economies. By focusing on modernizing railways, India aims to connect its vast landscape more efficiently, which is vital for its growth.
