Hello, University of Virginia community,
I hope this year is treating you well so far! Whether you took some time to recharge over the holidays or worked through them, I appreciate all that you bring to UVA. A special thanks to our UVA Health staff and all who kept things running while others took a break.
As I step into the role of the 10th president of UVA, I feel incredibly grateful. This community has supported my family and me for 11 years, and I’m excited to give back. I want to express my gratitude to interim President Paul Mahoney and J.J. Davis for their leadership during the transition. Also, a heartfelt thank you to President Emeritus Jim Ryan, whose leadership inspired me as Dean of the Darden School of Business.
This is a pivotal moment for UVA, and I’m excited about the journey ahead. I’m here to listen, learn, and work with you all to shape our future together. Our strength lies in our people—faculty, staff, clinicians, students, and alumni—all working toward common goals and serving our local and broader communities.
Let me share three key points:
- First, I am focused on our mission, not on politics. My decisions will come from my passion for our community, a passion I know we all share.
- Second, I want to hear from you. My goal is to spend time with students, faculty, and staff in the coming weeks to better understand your needs and aspirations. Excellence requires teamwork, and we’re all in this together.
- Third, I aim to strengthen UVA as a leading university and an economic driver for Virginia. Working with leaders across the state, I want to ensure our excellence is accessible and relevant to the community.
Thank you for everything you bring to our community. I’m eager to collaborate with you all as we continue UVA’s mission of education, research, patient care, and public service.
