New Delhi: Indian Railways is stepping up its game with record production of modern coaches. These new General and non-AC coaches are designed to meet the growing demand for budget-friendly travel options, making train journeys more comfortable for everyone.
This year, Indian Railways plans to produce 4,838 new LHB GS and Non-AC coaches. For the next year, the goal is 4,802 coaches. The focus is on improving safety and comfort while keeping fares affordable.
The Amrit Bharat Express trains, which are entirely non-AC and feature sleeper and general class coaches, have been a hit. In 2025, a total of 13 new trains were launched, bringing the total to 30. Additionally, two Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services now connect Bhuj–Ahmedabad and Jaynagar–Patna, enhancing regional travel.
To ensure fair ticketing, Indian Railways has introduced Aadhaar verification for bookings. This means only verified users can book Tatkal tickets, helping weed out misuse of the e-ticketing system. So far, 5.73 crore suspicious user accounts have been deactivated, showing a strong commitment to integrity in ticketing.
Safety is a top priority, with a significant focus on reducing train accidents. From 135 accidents in 2014-15, the number has dropped dramatically to just 11 in the current financial year up to November 2025. A safety budget of Rs 1,16,470 crore has been nearly tripled, leading to improved safety measures. For instance, fog safety devices have surged from just 90 in 2014 to an impressive 25,939 in 2025.
During peak travel times, such as festivals, Indian Railways has maximized its efforts by running over 43,000 special train trips in 2025. This included 17,340 trains for the Maha Kumbh, ensuring everyone could travel smoothly during busy periods.
Looking ahead, 76 railway stations will get upgraded passenger holding areas, inspired by the New Delhi Railway Station’s Yatri Suvidha Kendra. This facility can accommodate up to 7,000 people and is equipped with essential amenities. The new holding areas are expected to be ready well before the 2026 festival season, providing even better service to passengers.
