Doug LaMalfa, a Republican congressman from Northern California, passed away during emergency surgery at 65. He was a fourth-generation rice farmer and represented a large, rural area for 13 years. Throughout his career, he secured reelection easily, but the recent redistricting due to Proposition 50 has put Republican seats at risk.
His death further tightens the GOP’s narrow majority in Congress. With only a two-vote margin, the Republican party now faces even more challenges in passing legislation after the resignation of Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on the same day.
Colleagues described LaMalfa as dedicated, highlighting his conservative principles, including low taxes and limited government. “Doug was a devoted husband and father,” said Inland Empire Rep. Ken Calvert. Emergency responders arrived at LaMalfa’s home after a 911 call and took him to a Chico hospital, where he later died. An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause.
LaMalfa’s district, which spans from Sacramento to the northern tip of California, has traditionally leaned conservative. Many residents feel a disconnect from the more progressive California government, with some even advocating for a new state called Jefferson. LaMalfa was a staunch supporter of former President Trump and focused on issues like increasing water supplies for farmers and easing environmental regulations.
One of his last significant actions in Congress was advocating for the Secure Rural Schools Act, a funding program for schools reliant on federal land. Despite its popularity, the program lapsed in 2023. Frustrated with legislative gridlock, LaMalfa remarked on the difficulties of passing basic bills.
Many remembered him fondly, including California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff, who noted LaMalfa’s commitment to his constituents. Governor Gavin Newsom praised him as a devoted public servant and announced flags at the Capitol would be flown at half-staff.
LaMalfa faced an uphill battle for reelection, as redistricting created a tougher political landscape. His newly drawn district favored likely opponent Mike McGuire, a Democrat. LaMalfa’s career also included his support for controversial measures like ending affirmative action and efforts to ban same-sex marriage.
His unexpected passing has immediate implications for the GOP, especially as they work to prevent a government shutdown and navigate healthcare legislation that could increase costs for many citizens.
Moreover, his death is part of a growing trend in political challenges, with data from the Congressional Research Service showing that the average turnover for House members has been rising.
