Shashi Tharoor recently had an inspiring encounter on a Vande Bharat train with 16-year-old AI innovator Raul John Aju. This brief conversation has sparked interest across social media, showcasing Raul’s remarkable achievements in artificial intelligence.
Raul, who hails from Kochi, Kerala, is already a force in tech, having created over 10 AI tools aimed at making technology accessible and language-inclusive for India. He started exploring AI at just six years old and founded his own startup, JustEase, by age 16. He focuses on solving real-world problems with technology, ensuring it can communicate in various Indian languages.
During their exchange, Raul confidently asked Tharoor if he uses AI. The politician mentioned Google’s AI tool, Gemini, but Raul raised a critical question: Does India need its own AI? Tharoor acknowledged the need for AI that understands India’s diverse languages and cultures, emphasizing that technology must go beyond English.
Raul’s systems currently support voice interactions in Malayalam, Hindi, and Urdu. This focus on regional languages is crucial, as many parts of India’s linguistic landscape remain neglected by major tech platforms. Interestingly, a recent report from the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) shows that only about 10% of global AI tools are tailored for Indian languages.
Raul’s other projects include NyayaSathi, a legal assistant designed specifically for India, and Mebot, a humanoid robot that mirrors his actions. He has collaborated with various institutions, including the Kerala government, on AI initiatives that enhance public service delivery.
Beyond innovation, Raul also engages audiences on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, where he shares AI experiments and easy-to-understand tech content. His goal is to transform curiosity about AI into real understanding and application.
This meeting between Tharoor and Raul highlights a powerful dynamic between experience and fresh ideas, showcasing a promising future for India’s technology through the eyes of its youth.
