Kano State’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, recently announced an impressive leap in Nigeria’s Climate Governance Ranking. Within just one year, Kano State moved from 35th to 4th place. This achievement was celebrated during Hashim’s first anniversary in office.
He explained that the rapid improvement is a result of strong leadership, effective reforms, and teamwork among various government bodies and partners. Last year’s ranking reflected deep-rooted issues in governance. Hashim described it as a “troubling data point” that made him eager to help change Kano’s trajectory.
Now, with a 4th place ranking, he believes that coordinated governance and good systems can lead to real results. He emphasized that this success is a collective effort. “It’s not just one person or department,” he stated. “It’s about allowing institutions to operate effectively and ensuring everyone does their part.”
Looking ahead, Kano is aiming for the top spot in the next ranking. Hashim credits Governor Abba Yusuf for prioritizing environmental issues and fostering a collaborative culture within the state’s institutions. Under Yusuf’s leadership, the environment sector has become a key focus for community welfare and sustainable development.
Over the past year, the ministry concentrated on various initiatives, such as improving sanitation, flood management, erosion control, providing water access, and promoting afforestation. Hashim praised his team for their dedication, highlighting that their efforts were crucial to these achievements.
He also recognized support from development partners like the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and UNICEF, which has been vital in advancing Kano’s environmental agenda. One important aspect of their strategy is involving local communities in the planning and implementation of climate actions. Their feedback is essential for shaping effective programs in both urban and rural areas.
During the anniversary event, Hashim unveiled a publication that details the reforms and lessons learned over the past year. This document aims to serve as a guide for maintaining progress and achieving long-term goals in climate governance.
