Kano State has made impressive strides in climate governance. In just one year, it surged from 35th to 4th place in Nigeria’s Climate Governance Ranking. Dr. Dahiru Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, shared this achievement during his one-year anniversary in office.
He attributed this success to strong leadership, institutional reforms, and teamwork across various government agencies. Reflecting on 2024, Hashim recalled that Kano’s low ranking highlighted serious challenges. “At that time, it was just a troubling statistic. I never imagined I’d be in a position to change that,” he noted.
Now, the state’s improved standing showcases the benefits of effective governance. Hashim emphasized that this success is not just about one person or office; it’s a collective effort. He said, “When institutions operate well and people embrace their duties, results follow.”
Kano’s leadership under Governor Abba Yusuf has been pivotal. The governor has made environmental issues a priority for public safety and sustainable development. “His approach has revitalized our institutions and emphasized accountability,” Hashim explained.
Over the past year, the ministry focused on restoring systems and implementing practical solutions in areas like sanitation, flood management, and afforestation. These initiatives are crucial as Nigeria faces significant environmental challenges. A recent report from the World Meteorological Organization highlighted that West Africa is seeing increasing climate impacts, with a rise in extreme weather events.
Community involvement has also been vital. Hashim stressed that feedback from residents, both urban and rural, shapes planning and execution. He introduced a publication at the event, documenting reforms and lessons learned, aimed at sustaining progress in the future.
This remarkable journey from the bottom tier of climate governance to a leading position reflects the possibilities of focused action and collaboration. As Kano aims for the top spot in the next ranking, it serves as a testament to the power of good governance and community engagement.
