Lego just unveiled its new Smart Play system at CES 2026, blending digital technology with classic play. This innovative approach introduces “Smart Bricks,” each equipped with sensors and a tiny chip, all working together to make playtime more interactive. However, seeing it in action is far more impressive than just hearing about it.
The Smart Play system consists of three main elements: the Smart Brick, Smart Tags, and Smart Minifigures. The Smart Brick comes with sensors that let it detect sounds, colors, and even movement. Currently, each brick looks the same, so it depends on the Smart Tags and Minifigures to bring unique experiences to life.
During a recent demo, I got to play with some simple builds: a car, a helicopter, and a duck, each linked to a specific Smart Tag. For example, pushing the car made engine noises, and flipping it over created crash sounds. It’s engaging to see how the Smart Brick reacts to play.
The first three Smart Play sets are themed around Star Wars. In one set, players can recreate battles with Smart Minifigures like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Positioning them activates sounds that match their actions. When the Miniatures battle, you hear lightsaber sounds and character reactions, like Vader’s trademark “noooooooo!” when defeated.
The other two sets involve Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter and Luke’s Red Five X-Wing. Not only do they look great, but they also respond uniquely based on their tags. For example, if you place Luke in the X-Wing, you hear his theme music. The Smart Brick also differentiates between a TIE fighter and X-Wing when swooshed through the air, showing off its advanced sound features.
Experts suggest this type of technology could significantly boost children’s social play. According to a recent study, children who engage in interactive play are more likely to develop better social skills. Lego seems intent on making playtime a group experience rather than a solitary one.
While the initial sets may not seem far from traditional Lego, they are designed to hold up to rough play. Lego has noted that these new sets deliberately accommodate active engagement, fitting nicely in a child’s hands.
Overall, the Smart Play system marks an exciting new chapter for Lego. It cleverly combines beloved franchises with technology to enhance creativity and interaction among kids. As they expand the lineup, the potential for unique crossover experiences with other franchises, like Jurassic World or Marvel, seems boundless.
The aim here is clear: Smart Play is focused on kids and encourages fun, without the complexity of apps or screens. This simple approach could reshape how children play, promoting more interaction and imagination, which is what Lego has always stood for.
