Martin University, Indiana’s only predominantly Black university, recently announced it is closing its doors. Effective December 31, the university voluntarily relinquished its accreditation, which is essential for federal financial aid. Founded in 1977, Martin faced mounting challenges, including the termination of almost all staff in mid-December, leaving many without pay. In the wake of these developments, alumni expressed their frustration with the leadership, specifically targeting board chair Joseph Perkins. Dwight McGill, the alumni association president, called for his resignation, citing a lack of transparency and accountability.
The university’s trustees acknowledged the emotional impact of the closure on the community and insisted that they made the decision collectively under difficult circumstances. They urged for civility among alumni and supporters rather than personal attacks.
In a bid to assist affected students, nearby institutions like UIndy and Marian University have agreed to match Martin’s tuition rates, making it easier for students to transfer and complete their degrees.
Looking ahead, Martin University plans to honor its financial commitments as much as possible, which may involve selling some assets. The university’s campus is valued at approximately $13.1 million.
