Kansas City Current Welcomes Chris Armas as Head Coach
On January 7, 2026, the Kansas City Current announced Chris Armas as their new head coach. With a rich history in soccer, Armas is excited to bring his experience to the team.
Co-owners Angie and Chris Long expressed their enthusiasm: “Chris’s extensive background as a player and coach aligns perfectly with our vision for the Kansas City Current. His leadership and demand for excellence will enhance our competitive spirit as we aim for championships.”
Armas recently coached the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer (MLS), leading them back to the playoffs in 2024 and achieving a third-place finish in the 2025 Leagues Cup. His success in the Rocky Mountain Cup solidified his reputation as a strong coach.
His coaching journey began in 2008 as an assistant with the Chicago Fire FC. A standout period was his tenure at Adelphi University from 2011 to 2014, where he guided the women’s soccer team to significant achievements, including their first NCAA Tournament berth in years and rising to ninth in national rankings.
In 2015, Armas joined the New York Red Bulls, helping them win the Supporters’ Shield. He later became head coach and led the team to impressive stats before taking on roles in the English Premier League with Manchester United and Leeds United.
“I’m honored to take the helm at Kansas City Current,” Armas stated. “The culture and the vision here inspire me. I’m dedicated to helping this club become the best in women’s football.”
In his playing days, Armas was considered one of the best American defensive midfielders. His career spanned 12 years, primarily with LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire FC, during which he celebrated numerous victories, including an MLS Cup and several Open Cups. Notably, he was named to the MLS Best XI five times and earned six All-Star selections.
Armas also represented the United States Men’s National Team, amassing 66 caps and playing a crucial role in World Cup qualifying teams, even though injuries kept him from playing in the tournaments.
Sporting director Vlatko Andonovski shared his excitement, highlighting Armas’s wealth of experience and passion for the game. “He will be invaluable in shaping our organization,” Andonovski said.
Armas has deep roots in soccer, having led Adelphi to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his time there. He even played for the Long Island Rough Riders in the USISL before joining the MLS.
Chris and his wife Justine have two sons, Christopher and Aleksei. With Armas at the helm, the Kansas City Current looks poised for a bright future.
As the women’s soccer scene continues to grow, clubs like the Current are setting higher standards. According to a recent survey, women’s soccer viewership has surged by 63% in the last two years, reflecting the sport’s increasing popularity.
With leaders like Armas, there’s optimism that the Kansas City Current will contribute to this exciting trend in women’s sports.
