MANISTIQUE, Mich. – Recently, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital hosted a special event where volunteers from Manistique Area Schools and Good Neighbor Services distributed food boxes to those in need.
Mike Powers, who leads the YETI Service Club at the school, shared that students had been busy fundraising for this initiative. Even on a snow day, they showed up to help. “It feels good to support our community, especially with food insecurity being such a pressing issue right now,” said Tanner Papple, a co-president of the club.
Powers also noted that this food truck visit was a first for the winter months. “Typically, securing a location for the truck is a challenge during January and February,” he explained. But thanks to community volunteers, they were able to make it happen.
Over recent years, food insecurity has significantly impacted many communities. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 10.5% of American households faced food insecurity in 2020, a number that has only increased in the wake of rising costs and economic challenges. Local efforts like the one in Manistique are crucial in addressing these immediate needs.
Powers appreciates the community’s support, saying, “This wouldn’t work without our volunteers.” Good Neighbor Services continues to seek more hands to help out, showing the strength of community solidarity. The next food distribution is scheduled for February 4, with details to be announced on the school’s Facebook page.
Together, local groups are tackling food insecurity, reminding us of the spirit of giving back and the importance of community involvement.
