New Delhi: Indian Railways is launching its first hydrogen train in a groundbreaking pilot project. This initiative aims to showcase the potential of hydrogen-powered trains, focusing on greener transportation. Developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, the hydrogen train is currently undergoing tests on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway.
The Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) is responsible for the train’s testing, which includes important assessments like oscillation tests and Emergency Brake Distance trials. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that the train’s manufacturing has been completed and that a hydrogen plant will be established in Jind. This plant will produce hydrogen through electrolysis, a key method for generating green hydrogen.
This hydrogen train is a significant achievement for India. It is designed and built in the country, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. After successful trials and necessary approvals, the train is set to launch, representing a major shift towards eco-friendly rail transport.
Remarkably, this train is the world’s longest hydrogen train set, featuring 10 coaches and an impressive power output of 2400 kW. It includes two Driving Power Cars, each with a capacity of 1200 kW, alongside eight passenger coaches.
A standout feature of the hydrogen train is its zero CO2 emissions; it only produces water vapor, making it a clean alternative to traditional train systems. Vaishnaw called this project a monumental step toward next-generation fuel technology in Indian Railways. Since this project is still in its pilot phase, comparing the costs of hydrogen-fueled trains with traditional systems isn’t feasible just yet.
The introduction of hydrogen trains will place India among a select group of countries—like Germany, China, Sweden, and Japan—that have already embraced this technology. This aligns with global trends that prioritize sustainability in transportation. According to a recent report, the global hydrogen train market is expected to grow significantly, emphasizing the urgency for India to keep pace with innovation.
