The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) recently celebrated 75 years of the Indian Republic with a special event called the Conclave on Indian Republic @ 75. They also opened the second phase of the Vendhar Museum, which focuses on the Constitution of India. This gathering was an opportunity for leaders, students, and guests to discuss the values of the Constitution, the importance of democracy, and the youth’s role in shaping the nation.
Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, the founder of SRMIST, led the celebrations. R. N. Ravi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, attended as the chief guest. The event featured the National Anthem and the traditional Tamil Thai Vazhthu, along with the historic song “Vande Mataram,” which has special significance in India’s fight for freedom.
After the conclave, Governor Ravi opened the new section of the Vendhar Museum. This part of the museum showcases the Constitution’s journey, its core principles, and the functioning of democratic institutions. It supports SRMIST’s mission to promote awareness about constitutional literacy and civic values.
During his address, Governor Ravi praised India as the world’s largest and most stable democracy. “Democracy is part of our DNA,” he stated, highlighting how India has nurtured democratic values for thousands of years. He pointed out that educational institutions like SRMIST play a vital role in this journey, imparting not only academic knowledge but also cultural and national values.
He encouraged students to embrace the current opportunities, calling it a “golden time for Bharat.” “Each one of you is a national asset,” he said, urging them to dream big and work hard. He emphasized that the youth’s growth leads to the nation’s progress, urging them to combine ambition with discipline for a better future.
Dr. Paarivendhar also shared his thoughts on the significance of educational institutions in supporting democracy and national growth. He expressed that running a university requires commitment and respect, along with adequate funding and autonomy to ensure quality education and research.
He stated that the Vendhar Museum is a testament to SRMIST’s commitment to preserving essential constitutional values and educating future generations through hands-on learning experiences. According to him, education should unite people and foster a sense of national responsibility.
Highlighting recent statistics, a 2022 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center revealed that 78% of young Indians believe that democracy is the best form of government. This growing belief underscores the importance of educating youth about their rights and responsibilities within a democratic framework.
