Tuesday marked a key moment in Lansing as discussions moved forward on the management of the city’s golf course, baseball stadium, and convention center.
The city is looking into transferring management to ASM Global, a company based in Los Angeles.
Currently, the Lansing Entertainment and Public Facilities Authority (LEPFA) oversees the Lansing Center, Groesbeck Golf Course, and Jackson Field. During their monthly meeting, Chairman Maureen McNulty Saxton addressed the board about ASM’s proposal. She emphasized that the city is taking its time with this decision.
“We have a responsibility to these facilities,” McNulty Saxton said. “We want to move forward carefully.”
ASM Global manages several venues in Michigan, such as Huntington Place in Detroit and Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. Harry Cann, an executive from ASM, assured the board that local control would remain intact.
“We offer resources and expertise while allowing municipal partners to maintain control,” Cann explained. “They approve budgets and set our goals while we handle daily operations.”
By outsourcing management, the city hopes to cut costs. Last year, LEPFA reported that the city subsidized these facilities by over a million dollars.
A vote on whether to hire ASM Global is anticipated next month. This decision could reshape how Lansing manages its key venues, potentially improving efficiency and saving taxpayer money.
