Transforming Indian Railways: Ashwini Vaishnaw Calls for a Shift from Colonial Mindset to Modern Innovation

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently called on senior railway officials to shed outdated colonial mindsets. He emphasized the importance of believing in Indian talent and capabilities. This message came during the 70th Ati Vishisht Rail Seva Puraskar ceremony, where he recognized 100 railway employees for their impressive work in train operations.

Vaishnaw pointed out how the homegrown Vande Bharat trains showcase India’s technological progress. He stressed that Indian Railways must evolve significantly to achieve the vision of “Viksit Bharat, Viksit Railways” by 2047. This goal envisions a fully developed nation, and railways play a crucial role in that journey.

He praised the dedication of employees, noting how their hard work has helped the railways tackle long-standing issues, enhance capacity, and reach major operational milestones. To guide this progress, he laid out a six-point roadmap focused on systemic reforms, technology adoption, safety, advanced training, maintenance excellence, and a shift in mindset.

Vaishnaw highlighted the need to engage startups and innovators. He encouraged railway staff to propose innovative solutions and ensure successful ideas are implemented throughout the network.

Recent statistics show a trend in young professionals entering the railway sector. According to a survey by the National Skill Development Corporation, nearly 70% of employees in railways are under 40. This demographic shift indicates a workforce ready to embrace change and innovation.

Vaishnaw’s vision aligns with broader national reforms aimed at modernizing India. He believes that with a younger workforce, transparent practices, and a focus on reform, Indian Railways can set a global standard and help propel India toward developed status by 2047.

In essence, the railway sector stands at a pivotal moment. With commitment and fresh ideas, it has the potential to be a cornerstone of India’s future.
