Three Democratic senators are seeking to have Apple and Google remove Elon Musk’s apps, X and Grok, from their stores. The push comes after reports that Grok’s AI tool flooded X with sexualized images of people without their consent.
Following criticism, X adjusted Grok’s functionality, limiting image generation to paying users and seemingly restricting the types of images it can create. In their letter to Apple and Google executives, Senators Ron Wyden, Ed Markey, and Ben Ray Luján urged the companies to enforce their terms of service, which prohibit apps enabling such content. They emphasized that simply restricting access to paying customers doesn’t resolve the issue, asserting that it still profits from harmful imagery.
The senators highlighted that for over a week, users had been using Grok to generate inappropriate images, modifying everyday people into sexualized versions. This trend raises broader questions about digital ethics and consent, especially considering advancements in AI technology.
Wyden pointed out that failing to act on these issues could undermine claims that their platforms provide a safer user experience. He stated, “Turning a blind eye to X’s behavior would mock moderation practices.”
