Becca Good is grieving the loss of her wife, Renee Good, who was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis. On that tragic day, they had paused to help their neighbors. Becca describes Renee, the mother of three, as a person who radiated kindness. In her heartfelt statement, she noted, “We had whistles. They had guns.”
Renee, just 37, was surrounded by three Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on a snowy street just blocks from their home. Eyewitness video shows an officer demanding that she open the door before shots were fired, hitting her as she pulled forward.
Trump administration officials labeled Renee as a threat, claiming she tried to run over an officer. This narrative has been widely contested by local officials and protesters. Many believe this characterization fails to capture who she truly was.
Becca’s statement focused on honoring Renee rather than the details of that day. The couple had moved to Minneapolis recently and were raising Renee’s 6-year-old son from a previous marriage. She remembered Renee as a Christian devoted to love and kindness. “We are here to love each other,” Becca wrote.
On social media, Renee described herself simply—“poet, writer, wife, mom.” She expressed joy about experiencing life in Minneapolis. Her ex-husband, who requested not to be named, shared that she had never been involved in protests.
In the wake of Renee’s death, a vigil was held in Seattle. Candles were lit in her memory, and many spoke out against the tragedy.
Interestingly, according to a recent survey from the Pew Research Center, over half of Americans believe ICE agents are too aggressive in their actions. This incident has sparked renewed debate over immigration enforcement and community safety.
Renee delighted in taking care of others. Becca highlights that they were raising their son to believe everyone deserves kindness, no matter their background. “I will continue to teach him that compassion is key, even in the face of fear and anger,” Becca said.
Renee’s legacy is one of light and hope. As people join together in memory of her, there’s a call for a more compassionate world, one where justice prevails over fear.
