New Coordinators for NMU Football
Northern Michigan University’s football team is shaking things up. Head coach Matt Janus has announced Ryan Bright as the new defensive coordinator and Peter ‘Boomer’ Roepke as the offensive coordinator.
Ryan Bright’s Background
Ryan Bright brings nearly ten years of coaching experience. His journey includes time at well-known schools like the University of Arkansas, where he helped boost their defense significantly, moving from 76th to 35th in national rushing defense. Bright played a key role in guiding Arkansas to a Liberty Bowl win and their first victory over a top-five opponent since 2007.
Before Arkansas, he was a defensive analyst at Stanford. His longest stint was at the University of Wisconsin, where he worked in various roles from 2018 to 2023. During his time there, Wisconsin consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top defenses, even claiming the number one spot in total and rushing defense in 2021.
Bright’s coaching career started at St. Norbert College, where he worked with quarterbacks. He holds a bachelor’s degree from UW-La Crosse and a master’s from Wisconsin.
Peter ‘Boomer’ Roepke’s Experience
Peter Roepke brings a wealth of experience, having coached at multiple college levels, including Division I and junior college. Last season, he served as interim head coach and offensive coordinator at Concordia-St. Paul, where he made impactful changes to the program.
At the University of Northwestern–St. Paul, Roepke was instrumental in leading the team to undefeated seasons in 2022 and 2024. His offense was impressive, averaging over 41 points per game during the 2024 season, which led to several record-breaking achievements.
Roepke emphasizes player development, creating monitoring programs that greatly improved academic retention among student-athletes. His background also includes time at Iowa State University and USC, where he was not only a player but also received accolades for his dedication.

The hiring of Bright and Roepke reflects a shift in college football. Many programs are looking for coaches who can not only strategize during games but also build strong player relationships and foster personal development.
