Embracing a Low-Maintenance Lifestyle: The Surprising High Cost of ‘Waking Up Like This’

Low maintenance look

Many people are opting for a low-maintenance look these days. Makeup artist Muriel Vega Perez explains that this trend arises from a collective sense of tiredness—mentally, emotionally, and physically. People want processes that feel simpler and don’t demand constant attention.

According to clinical psychologist Rainier Ladic, embracing simplicity helps individuals stay true to themselves. “When you keep it simple, you move away from the need for constant approval,” he notes. For many, reducing complexity in life can relieve some of the social pressures we face today.

Beauty influencer Angel Villarta sums up the low-maintenance approach as looking “put-together without trying too hard.” She emphasizes that confidence often comes from how you feel inside. Villarta maintains a streamlined beauty routine that includes skin and hair treatments—regular facials, massages, and wellness habits keep her energized and feeling good.

Her routine includes just a few makeup steps, focusing on natural looks with minimal products. Villarta has invested in both skincare and non-surgical treatments to maintain this balance, spending around P15,000 for multiple sessions, which she believes is worthwhile.

Similarly, fellow influencer Samantha Pagar spends time and money on beauty treatments but sees them as a justified investment. “With these treatments, I need less time in my daily beauty routine,” she said. Her monthly expenses can total around P35,000, but she values the impact on her daily confidence and overall self-care.

Mommy influencer Jamie Tecson-Adarve also aims for efficiency in her beauty routine. Her quarterly expenses of about P5,000 allow her to maintain a simple yet effective self-care regimen that fits into her busy life as a stay-at-home mom.

There are debates online about whether investing in low-maintenance routines truly pays off. Ladic advises against pursuing trends that don’t fit your needs or budget. Investing in what makes your life smoother is key—beauty routines should not add to your stress.

Ultimately, whether you should invest in a low-maintenance lifestyle depends on your own priorities and budget. “Investing in self-care can lead to gains in confidence, which is worth it,” says Villarta. Pagar echoes this sentiment, feeling that it enhances her self-image and overall fulfillment. Tecson-Adarve appreciates the time savings that a low-maintenance lifestyle affords her, allowing her to focus on her family while feeling polished.

However, Ladic warns that pursuing minimalism for the wrong reasons can lead to self-sabotage. If you feel guilty about spending on yourself, it could be counterproductive. But if investing in a low-maintenance life feels right and aligns with your personality, it can be a smart choice—allowing more time and space for personal growth.
