As we step into the first week of 2026, climate change continues to be a pressing concern. A recent report by World Weather Attribution highlighted that extreme weather, driven by climate change, is hitting poorer communities harder than ever.
Many people feel overwhelmed by the scale of this problem. However, there are ways to learn about climate change and take action. For instance, educational courses are a great start. A new one will soon launch in County Kildare.
The “Free Beginners Climate Course for the Over 55s” will be led by Jacinta Barris, a retired UN diplomat. Through this course, participants will learn how to measure their carbon footprint and understand barriers to changing behaviors related to climate change.
This six-session course will take place at Naas Library, with sessions scheduled on February 24, March 3, March 10, March 19, March 24, and May 5 in 2026, each running from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Attendees can enjoy tea during these sessions, making for a friendly atmosphere.
Experts suggest that community-based learning can significantly impact climate awareness. According to a study by the Climate Reality Project, increased knowledge at the local level leads to greater engagement in sustainability efforts.
Interestingly, social media trends show a growing awareness of climate issues, particularly among the younger generation. Many online platforms feature discussions about eco-friendly choices, from reducing plastic use to supporting renewable energy initiatives.
For those interested in this course, Naas Library can be contacted via email at naaslib@kildarecoco.ie or by calling 045 980 795.
By taking steps to educate ourselves, we can help tackle climate change together. Understanding the issue is the first step toward action, and community courses like this one play a vital role.
