The US and allied forces recently launched significant airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria, as announced by the US Central Command. This action is part of what’s called Operation Hawkeye Strike.
President Donald Trump ordered the strikes following a deadly attack by IS on American troops in Syria last month. The objective is clear: to combat terrorism and safeguard US forces in the region. Central Command emphasized, “If you harm our warfighters, we will find you anywhere in the world.”
In this operation, more than 90 precision munitions were used against over 35 targets, involving more than 20 aircraft. This included F-15Es, A-10s, AC-130Js, MQ-9s, and Jordanian F-16s. While the exact location of the strikes and any casualties remain unclear, the message from US officials is unwavering.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on social media, saying, “We will never forget, and never relent.” This response is part of a broader strategy after IS gunmen killed two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra last December. Hegseth had framed Operation Hawkeye Strike as a “declaration of vengeance,” highlighting the US commitment to defend its people.
Before this weekend’s strikes, US forces had already made headway, capturing or killing nearly 25 IS members in 11 separate missions in late December. One of these initial missions saw American and Jordanian forces utilizing airpower to hit over 70 IS targets across central Syria.
According to a 2023 report by the Global Terrorism Index, while the reach of groups like IS has diminished, attacks still pose a risk, especially in regions like Syria. In fact, data indicates a 30% increase in attacks in the region compared to the previous year. As the US continues its operations, the situation remains tense.
