Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, emphasized the need for public participation in the upcoming referendum. “If you truly want reforms, then our answer must be ‘yes,’” she stated at the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) civic award 2025 ceremony.
Both the national parliamentary election and the referendum will take place on February 12. Rizwana highlighted this date as crucial for shifting power dynamics in Bangladesh from the ruling elite to the people. She urged everyone to engage in the referendum, explaining that a silent response could delay reforms for years.
She encouraged citizens to read and understand the proposed reforms, noting that the government plans to provide thorough information. “If you want change, you must show your support in the referendum,” she said.
Rizwana also pointed out that fear tactics might discourage voters. Historically, movements in July and August succeeded because people confronted their fears. “We’ve faced intimidation, but overcoming it is essential for progress,” she explained.
She called on the youth—a vital voting bloc—to actively participate in strengthening democracy. “The young generation has liberated us from autocracy, but democracy needs vigilant citizens to thrive,” Rizwana stressed.
This call for engagement reflects a broader global trend. According to a recent Pew Research survey, 70% of young people in various countries feel their vote matters in shaping the future. Empowering citizens, especially the youth, has become vital for maintaining democratic values.
At the ceremony, Rizwana congratulated award recipients, reminding them that recognition comes with increased responsibility. Notable attendees included Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and writer Professor Salimullah Khan. The event was led by DNCC administrator Mohammad Ejaz.
By fostering awareness and encouraging participation in the referendum, leaders like Rizwana are aiming to create a more balanced and democratic society in Bangladesh.
